The SU carburettor is simple to strip. It has only one jet (except in a few special types) and very few moving parts. It is very reliable, but it can become dirty and choked — and some parts wear out. The most common type of SU is the HS. The HIF, overleaf, differs in some ways. They should be removed from the engine for cleaning.

SU carburettors are a brand of carburettor of the constant-depression type. The design was in of the venturi, until the pressure drop in the venturi returns to its nominal level. To prevent erratic and sudden movements of the piston it is damped by light oil (20W Grade) in a dashpot, which requires periodic replenishment.

On older SU carburettors, which have a vent hole in the screw-in plastic top of the dashpot, the oil level should be i in. (13 mm) above the top of the piston tube. On dustproof SUs, which have a hole in the dashpot neck instead of the top, the oil should be i in. (13 mm) below the piston top.

It's a SU thing, I cannot think of another type of carb that has oil in it. Very basically the fuel jet neddle is installed in a suction piston. As engine speeds increase and vacuum increases and the suction piston is drawn upward (maybe pushed a little too??) into the dome of the carb. oil (preferably S.A.E. 20) until the level is in (13 mm) above the top Of the hollow piston rod. refit the damoei- and screw the cap firmly into the suction chamber. Bal/ bearing suction chambers. Unscrew the cap and raise the piston and damper to the top of their travel. Fill the recess in the damper retainer with engine oil (preferably S.A.E. 20), At 5000 rpm, the volume of air will be 5 times that at 1000 rpm or 2500 litres (88.29 cubic feet) per minute. Assume the engine to which the carburettor is supplying fuel is running at idle speed. The jet, fuel needle and piston spring are sorted to match the performance requirements of the engine. The reason why "publications" show the oil level above the top of the piston, and this includes both BMC/Leyland and SU notes, IS to lubricate the running surface between the piston and the dashpot. Probably less necessary on ball bearing suction chambers, but I would still top up above the level of the piston to ensure that friction doesn't do part of the damping!!
